Anti-corruption party wins elections

Early elections took place in Latvia last Sunday. The Union of Farmers and Greens obtained 12,27% of the votes and 13 seats in the 100 seats-parliament, of which 4 seats go to the Greens.

The big winner of the elections is the new center-right and anti-corruption party of former president Valdis Zatlers, which enters the parliament with 22 seats. Zatlers announced that his party will not cooperate with the three so-called oligarch parties – the Union of Greens and Farmers, Latvia's First Party/Latvian Way, and the People's Party. (The second one failed to pass the 5% threshold, the latter one was dissolved two weeks after the announcement of the Reform Party.)

The largest party in the country is now the Harmony Center, a coalition of socialist parties, which has a lot of supporters among the large Russian minority in Latvia.

The Greens have been in government for quite some years in Latvia, and Environmental minister Raimonds Vējonis was one of the first green ministers in Europe. The Latvian Greens hope to get in government again but, given the outcome of the recent elections, their chances have considerably reduced.
